At Advanced Geotechnical Solutions, Inc. (AGS), we are often called to a potential development site to discuss geotechnical engineering services. Many times, when similar exploration services have already been performed on areas nearby, people assume that the testing administered will apply to their development area as well.  When this happens, it is often assumed that a geotechnical engineer is no longer needed. Unfortunately, this line of thinking is all too common.

The real outcome of this decision usually ends up costing much more in design and construction of the project than it would have if the proper geotechnical engineering had been performed in the beginning stages of the project. Without these soil tests, other design professionals on the team increase their factor of safety to ensure a quality product. An even worse outcome is that the project may be designed on false soil assumptions and is inherently risky from a safety and long-term performance perspective.

Another reason people shy away from hiring a geotechnical engineering is because they believe the fees are too costly. However, fees of high-quality geotechnical engineering firms typically cost less than 1% of the construction budget for larger projects.  This is a small price to pay to ensure that your next project is done safely, will remain safe for years to come, and continue to be cost-efficient.

Advanced Geotechnical Solutions is proud to provide a multitude of construction observation services, including pile driving observation. Our qualified personnel monitor driving methods, record pile information, and note pile damage if encountered. We also calculate the provided pile capacity for comparison against the specified target capacities. This information, along with any other field notes, is recorded digitally on-site before being compiled into a report and provided to you, the client.  

Retaining an experienced engineering firm for your pile driving operation allows you to remain up-to-date on construction as the piles go into the ground. It also allows you to keep detailed records on the construction methods and capacities on each pile, information that could be invaluable later in the project’s lifetime.

We are excited to introduce the newest member of the team, Codey D. Lewis. Codey is an Engineering Technician here at AGS.

Codey received a bachelor’s of science degree in Geology from the University of Wyoming in 2018. Codey enjoys Geophysics and learning new techniques to apply towards sub-surface analysis. Born and raised in Casper Wyoming, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He is currently waiting to test for his G.I.T in route to acquiring his PG in Wyoming.

He is doing a great job and getting up to speed with our projects and helping out in the field and the lab! Codey is a great asset to the team and we are happy to have him on board!

One of the services Advanced Geotechnical Solutions offers is construction materials testing (CMT). Our experience, and that of our profession, clearly indicates that clients who retain the geotechnical engineering firm of record to review the project plans and specifications and provide geotechnical observation services during construction, significantly lower their risk of costly design and construction and maintenance problems.

The CMT services offered are foundation construction observation to include shallow and deep foundations of all kinds, density testing, and concrete testing. Some of the individual services encompassed in foundation construction observation include pier drilling observation, rebar observation, driven pile observation, etc.

Advanced Geotechnical Solutions has recently acquired two nuclear density gauges which we use to perform density tests in the field. All team members possess certifications through the APNGA ensuring the gauges are used safely, and correctly. These gauges have enabled us to conduct density tests faster, and with more accuracy.

We are excited to welcome back our newest full-time employee, Shantel Ramlo. Shantel was an intern over the summer of 2018 and returned back in January this year to her new position as Geotechnical Engineer I.

Shantel grew up in Brookings, South Dakota and graduated from Brookings High School in 2014. She attended Cornell University and earned her bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering. When asked what her favorite part of geotechnical engineering was, she stated, “I would say my favorite thing about geotechnical engineering is having to use creativity in engineering and building with natural materials. The soil and rock at every site is different and introduces new challenges.” In her spare time, Shantel is an avid outdoorswoman and enjoys hiking and backpacking. At the beginning of last summer, she spent six weeks traveling the western United States, backpacking through a total of 17 National Parks. 

Shantel is a great asset to the team and we are thrilled to have her back. She has already hit the ground running helping us keep on track of our very busy schedule!

Advanced Geotechnical Solutions (AGS) recently purchased a new GeoJac Automatic Consolidation Test Machine. The machine allows AGS to provide more data information in geotechnical reports to clients in a highly efficient manner, in turn making more accurate and solid design recommendations. In comparison, prior testing of this nature could take approximately 5-7 days; utilizing the GeoJac narrows this time frame to 2-3 days. By completing these tests before construction begins, AGS can assist clients in reducing long-term construction or maintenance costs.

The GeoJac provides automatic data acquisition and streamlined report generation. The testing system is mounted on a compact load frame. The tests, done after exploration and prior to report generation, measure the consolidation (settlement) and swelling of soil. With multiple configurations and constant rate testing, the GeoJac will allow AGS to provide safer, more cost-effective design recommendations for its clients.

This machine can be used for any projects that require soil analysis and is easily run by staff engineers. Projects may include geotechnical engineering of industrial facilities, retail facilities, commercial buildings, slope stability and forensic work. Once the tests are run the data are reduced into an automatic report and then used in further analyses and geotechnical report generation for each project.

The Town of Mills contacted Advanced Geotechnical Solutions (AGS) in early 2018, to provide a geotechnical engineering report to develop recommendations to install a new eagle statue, created by Custom Iron Eagles of Libby, Montana, along the southern Gateway into Mills adjacent to Wyoming Boulevard. The eagle, made of mild steel and stainless steel, weighs approximately 8,700 pounds and is planned to commemorate the Town becoming a city as recognized by the U.S. Census. To ensure that the ground chosen to house the sculpture would hold its weight and wind load from the 48 feet wingspan, over time and in the Wyoming weather that routinely sees winds over 60 mph, AGS provided geotechnical engineering in-kind services. Additionally, the location chosen for the eagle is near a portion of the North Platte River that is often exposed to shallow fluctuating groundwater. As such, having an accurate understanding of the groundwater depth and soil profile was critical. The final report given by AGS provided options for the structural engineer to develop a safe, cost-effective design for a drilled pier foundation or shallow spread foundation above the water table. The Town of Mills moved forward with Custom Iron Eagles after the geotechnical engineering report was completed.  The eagle was put in place on Wyoming Blvd. near the Mills Town Hall on October 16, 2018.
