We are pleased to introduce Julia Lemaster, Professional Geologist, to the AGS team! Julia’s expertise and experience will allow AGS to provide in-depth Environmental Site Assessment reports in conformance with ASTM practices for Transactional Screens for Limited Environmental Due Diligence, Phase I ESAs, Phase II ESAs.

Julia grew up in the Washington DC area, where she became involved in natural resource issues in the mid-1990s, having volunteered several thousand hours between an extensive county park system and the National Zoo. She graduated with a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Hiram College and has additional undergraduate coursework in geology from Casper College and graduate geology courses from Utah State. Julia has worked for both state government and as a regulatory geology consultant and has been a licensed professional geologist in Wyoming since 2013.

She has been an active member of the geologic community and is a past president of the Wyoming Geological Association and the Rocky Mountain Section of AAPG. Besides being involved in professional societies, Julia enjoys exploring the outdoors with her daughter.

Julia will be a great asset to the team, and we are happy to have her on board!

GIDDINGS MACHINE ADDS TO AGS SERVICES https://ags-west.com/2020/07/03/giddings-machine-adds-to-ags-services/ Fri, 03 Jul 2020 09:57:26 +0000 https://ags-west.com/?p=4959 The post GIDDINGS MACHINE ADDS TO AGS SERVICES appeared first on AGS.

Advanced Geotechnical Solutions (AGS) has recently acquired another piece of invaluable equipment for services. The Giddings Hydraulic Soil Sampling, Coring, and Drilling Machine allows AGS to perform more services in a simpler way. The quality of the equipment and features of the system make work in the field efficient.  The easy mobility of the machine being truck mounted enables us to core and test materials in tight areas.

This new machine means we can provide more services to meet and exceed your expectations while still providing the same quality and integrity you have come to know with AGS.

NEW CORING EQUIPMENT ENHANCES SERVICES https://ags-west.com/2020/04/30/new-coring-equipment/ Thu, 30 Apr 2020 23:07:29 +0000 https://ags-west.com/?p=4930 The post NEW CORING EQUIPMENT ENHANCES SERVICES appeared first on AGS.

Advanced Geotechnical Solutions (AGS) has recently added a hitch mounted coring machine to our services and equipment. This machine allows us to complete advanced coring processes in a simple manner. The easy mobility of the machine being hitch mounted enables us to core and test materials in tight areas. The coring machine also has a 180-degree movement from the center of the hitch and a 36 inch extension arm. AGS can core up to 12 inch diameter with the use of this equipment. Road and bridge explorationconcrete verification testing, and asphalt construction materials testing are just a few of the services that AGS can provide with this machine.

Recently, the machine has been used to perform explorations on local county and municipality roads. The tool allowed us to reduce the time for exploration significantly and minimized the disturbance to the roadway and traveling public. We have also used the machine to core new asphalt construction for verification.

Spring in Wyoming is when pavement distresses typically grow from what could have been an issue that was barely recognizable, to a pothole that needs attention. At Advanced Geotechnical Solutions, we spend a large portion of the Spring season looking down at pavement distresses. Here are a few of the basics:

Transverse cracks: cracks that extend partially or completely across the roadway. Typically caused from shrinkage of asphalt during winter months. If sealed, these cracks do not usuallycause severe problems, but do lower the International Roughness Index (IRI) of the roadway.

Figure 1. Transverse crack with developed fatigue cracking

Longitudinal cracks: cracks that run parallel with roadway. Can be caused from several problems and are generally defined as either wheel path or non-wheel path. Wheel path longitudinal cracks are usually one of the first signs that the pavement structure is not sufficient to support the traffic load. If left unaddressed, these cracks will likely increase in severity and lead to eventual fatigue cracking.

Figure 2. Longitudinal cracks in process of developing fatigue cracking

Fatigue cracking: AKA alligator cracking because it resembles the patchwork cracks that are found on an alligator. At this point, the pavement structure has failed. Major rehabilitation such as structural overlays, full depth patching, or complete reconstruction are required to rehabilitate the pavement and restore rideability.

Figure 3. Several fatigue cracking and patching

The main issue with any of these cracks is that precipitation that would normally be drained to the road ditch is now allowed to soak into the pavement section and reduce the strength of the structure. This in turn exacerbates the distress. So keep an eye on your roads now and throughout the summer, and perform routine maintenance to keep your pavements in good shape.

We have performed pavement analyses for small and large projects so you can rest assured that we can help you maintain your pavements as well! Please give us a call at 307-439-5439.

HOW HIRING A GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER CAN REDUCE MONETARY AND SAFETY RISKS https://ags-west.com/2019/09/20/how-hiring-a-geotechnical-engineer-can-reduce-monetary-and-safety-risks/ Fri, 20 Sep 2019 23:52:59 +0000 https://ags-west.com/?p=4816 The post HOW HIRING A GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER CAN REDUCE MONETARY AND SAFETY RISKS appeared first on AGS.

]]>

At Advanced Geotechnical Solutions, Inc. (AGS), we are often called to a potential development site to discuss geotechnical engineering services. Many times, when similar exploration services have already been performed on areas nearby, people assume that the testing administered will apply to their development area as well.  When this happens, it is often assumed that a geotechnical engineer is no longer needed. Unfortunately, this line of thinking is all too common.

The real outcome of this decision usually ends up costing much more in design and construction of the project than it would have if the proper geotechnical engineering had been performed in the beginning stages of the project. Without these soil tests, other design professionals on the team increase their factor of safety to ensure a quality product. An even worse outcome is that the project may be designed on false soil assumptions and is inherently risky from a safety and long-term performance perspective.

Another reason people shy away from hiring a geotechnical engineering is because they believe the fees are too costly. However, fees of high-quality geotechnical engineering firms typically cost less than 1% of the construction budget for larger projects.  This is a small price to pay to ensure that your next project is done safely, will remain safe for years to come, and continue to be cost-efficient.

PILE DRIVING OBSERVATION https://ags-west.com/2019/08/14/pile-driving-observation/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 16:12:39 +0000 https://ags-west.com/?p=4793 The post PILE DRIVING OBSERVATION appeared first on AGS.

Advanced Geotechnical Solutions is proud to provide a multitude of construction observation services, including pile driving observation. Our qualified personnel monitor driving methods, record pile information, and note pile damage if encountered. We also calculate the provided pile capacity for comparison against the specified target capacities. This information, along with any other field notes, is recorded digitally on-site before being compiled into a report and provided to you, the client.

Retaining an experienced engineering firm for your pile driving operation allows you to remain up-to-date on construction as the piles go into the ground. It also allows you to keep detailed records on the construction methods and capacities on each pile, information that could be invaluable later in the project’s lifetime.
