Boxelder Road Reconstruction

Overview

In April 2022, Advanced Geotechnical Solutions (AGS) launched a subsurface exploration for the Boxelder Road reconstruction project south of Glenrock, Wyoming. The roadway was in poor condition and needed significant upgrades. The project was completed in two sections: the southern section focused on reconstructing a deteriorated roadway segment, and the northern section involved widening and realigning the road near Glenrock.

AGS performed detailed subsurface exploration and geotechnical engineering, analyzing soil and rock conditions, and then provided recommendations to support long-term pavement performance. A key challenge was the area’s history of rock falls. To guard against this, AGS recommended a combination of protective systems, including concrete barriers, wire mesh, and catchment ditches—designed not just to work, but to last.

Finished in October 2024, Boxelder Road now stands as a model of safety and sustainability. The project was honored as the 2024 Project of the Year by the Wyoming Engineering and Surveying Society.
