Subsurface Exploration

Subsurface Exploration is a cornerstone of our comprehensive geotechnical services, aimed at providing vital insights into the geological conditions below the surface. Through a range of advanced techniques and tools in combination with our extensive experience, we ensure a thorough understanding of the subsurface environment to determine the right construction techniques for your site.

Our expertise in subsurface exploration includes:

  • Hollow Stem and Solid Stem Auger:
  • Wireline Core – HQ3:
  • Continuous Core:
  • ODEX:
  • Direct Push:
  • Cone Penetration Testing – Static and Dynamic Advancement:
  • Field Determination of Resistivity Using the Wenner 4-pin method:
  • Falling weight deflectometer:

In addition to the subsurface techniques listed above, we frequently coordinate with subconsultant firms to provide geophysical testing such as those listed below. These subsurface data are incorporated into our engineering analyses to enhance our understanding of complicated systems and projects resulting in more comprehensive report recommendations.

Geotechnical Laboratory Analyses

Laboratory analyses are an essential component of geotechnical engineering allowing us to gain insights into the intricate subsurface conditions of a site. Our comprehensive range of laboratory tests provide thorough characterization and strength determination of the soil and rock that make up the site. We typically run advanced soils and rock strength analyses because advanced is our standard!

Our services include:

  • Swell & Collapse of Soils: We assess soil volume changes due to moisture content variations, offering essential information on ground movement and stability.
  • Consolidation and Compressibility of Soil: Through consolidation testing, we evaluate time-dependent settlement behavior, aiding site development, earthwork, and foundation design.
  • Direct Shear Testing: We determine the long-term shear strength properties of soils, enabling accurate deep and shallow foundation design, slope stability analysis, and retaining wall design, to name a few.
  • Atterberg Limits: Our laboratory analyses evaluate the plasticity properties of soils, helping assess their suitability for various construction applications.
  • Permeability: We measure the permeability of silts, clays, sands, and gravels, providing insights into groundwater flow characteristics.
  • Hydrometer: With hydrometer testing, we determine the particle size distribution of very fine-grained soils, assisting in soil classification and engineering design.
  • Unit Weight of Soils: We quantify the unit weight of soils, which is vital for performing several common and advanced engineering analyses.
  • Unconfined Compression Testing: This testing method helps determine the compressive strength of cohesive soils, crucial for foundation design and stability assessments.
  • Minimum Resistivity: We conduct minimum resistivity testing to assess the electrical conductivity of soils, aiding in site developments and planning when electrical grids are designed.
  • Triaxial Shear Testing: We use this advanced test to evaluate the shear strength and stress-strain characteristics of soils under different conditions, providing essential data for geotechnical analyses.
  • Particle Size Analyses: Our laboratory conducts detailed particle size analyses, for soil classification.
  • Compressive Strength of Rock: We test the compressive strength of rock samples for a variety of engineering analyses including rippability during earthwork construction.

Count on Advanced Geotechnical Solutions to provide accurate and reliable laboratory results, helping you make informed decisions and ensuring the success of your geotechnical projects.

Geotechnical Engineering Analyses

Advanced Geotechnical Solutions is your trusted partner for comprehensive soil and rock testing services. Our expertise encompasses a wide range of critical analyses that provide valuable insights into the behavior and properties of earth materials.

Our extensive engineering capabilities include:

  • Finite Element Analyses: By employing advanced numerical modeling techniques, we analyze complex geotechnical problems, such as soil-structure interaction and ground response to loads.
  • Settlement analysis for structures of varying sizes, including fill areas and embankments: We evaluate the potential settlement of structures and earthworks to assess long-term stability and to minimize any adverse effects.
  • Distribution of stresses within soils: Through stress distribution analyses, we determine how loads are transmitted and distributed within the soil, aiding in the design of safe and cost-efficient structures and earthworks.
  • Deep and shallow foundation analyses: Our expertise in foundation analyses helps determine the optimal foundation type, size, and design to support structures safely and efficiently.
  • Pavement section analyses: we provide recommendations for design of roadways and parking areas using AASHTO 1993 and MEPDG guides and methods. We incorporate our analyses for current and future traffic loadings. An important factor on the many miles of roads we have designed is current and future energy developments. These can significantly impact pavement  performance if not properly considered.
  • Lateral earth pressures: By analyzing lateral earth pressures, we ensure the stability of retaining walls, basement walls, and shoring systems under varying soil conditions.
  • Slope stability analyses: we analyze natural and manmade slopes to provide stability recommendations for design risk analysis
  • Liquefaction analyses: We evaluate the susceptibility of soils to liquefaction under seismic events, assessing potential risks and offering mitigation strategies for resilient infrastructure design. We have performed multiple projects in which state-of-the-art centrifuge testing has increased the safety of structures and very significantly decreased the proposed construction budget.
  • Seepage analyses: Our seepage analyses indicate the flow of water through soil and rock, allowing us to assess potential groundwater-related issues and recommend appropriate drainage systems.
  • Forensic analyses: Our forensic analyses delve into the investigation of failed structures or geotechnical problems, identifying root causes and providing valuable insights for remedial measures.
